Worldwide Lawyers Cross-border estates

Worldwide Lawyers provides free workshop for North West lawyers

Worldwide Lawyers is hosting a free event for UK lawyers in Cheshire and the North West about cross-border estates. Private Client Seminar: Dealing with Cross Border Estates is on Thursday 28 November, from 3.30pm to 6pm, at University of Law (formerly the College of Law) in Christleton.

Sara Janion, director at Worldwide Lawyers, comments: “Our event is designed to give practical advice on best practice when dealing with estates with foreign assets, top tips on how to avoid common mistakes, and how to provide the best and most cost-effective service for your clients.”

The free workshop is aimed at lawyers and other professionals specialising in private client services, to help them develop their understanding when handling deceased estates where there are assets located overseas or where there are beneficiaries living abroad, scenarios which are becoming more and more common.

Sara, who is a notary public and formerly worked as a practising solicitor, adds: “We’ve seen a steady growth in UK lawyers requiring assistance with estates with a foreign element, but as it’s not necessarily something lawyers deal with on a regular basis and, of course, every country has its own rules and regulations, it can be difficult to know where to start. It can be tempting to delay dealing with the foreign aspects, but it’s important to ensure lawyers have the skills and knowledge to deal with these elements effectively and proactively so that you don’t miss an overseas deadline, for instance, and to ensure the value of the assets are preserved as far as possible.

“Another common mistake we see is that lawyers often don’t consider the effect of currency exchange properly and therefore inadvertently cost the estate thousands of pounds. All these things are easy to avoid though, and we can steer lawyers in the right direction to make their jobs easier and offer added value to their clients.”
