Wills

If you have any assets outside of the UK it is highly recommended that you instruct a lawyer qualified in the relevant country to advise you as to what would happen to these assets when you die. If necessary the lawyer can then assist you in making a Will to ensure that these assets are dealt with as you would wish after your death.

It is highly recommended that you seek legal advice in each country in which you have assets so that you may plan the succession of your overseas assets to ensure that they will be dealt with as you intend.

Laws relating to inheritance vary significantly from country to country. The overseas lawyer will be able to work alongside your UK lawyer to enable you to plan the succession of your worldwide assets.

Each country has its own specific laws in relation to who can deal with the assets of a deceased person, how their assets can be realised and who is required to pay any taxes and charges due.

Obtaining legal advice from an independent lawyer in the country where the deceased person was living or had assets is essential in order to ensure the deceased’s overseas property, assets and liabilities are properly dealt with.
